About/contact
I teach in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (in the philosophy half of the department), where I am Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Philosophy. My main interests are philosophy of mind (especially perception), metaphysics (especially color) and epistemology (especially self-knowledge). A few years ago I started working on philosophical issues relating to sex and gender. To make matters worse, I recently finished a book on these topics, Trouble with Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions, which is now out in the UK and the US.

Here is my CV (short version).
I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts with my wife Carole (who, unlike me, has appeared on Joe Rogan), our son Griffin, and our cat Lola. My brother Felix makes guitars near Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire, England.
Believe it or not, there are some other Alex Byrnes more noteworthy than myself. They mostly have an artistic bent. Whether the first one was known for his artistry on the pitch, I cannot say:
Alex Byrne, late Scottish professional footballer who played for Celtic.
Alex Byrne, Artistic Director from the Other Cambridge.
Alex Byrne, Australian artist, whose "work searches for ways to articulate experiential and often ineffable aspects of phenomena in the physical and psychological relationships between the natural and human world."
Alex Byrne, who "isn’t your typical makeup artist."
